FuraLED
Light Source for Ratiometric Calcium Imaging with Microsecond Switching
Cairn Research Ltd.
The FuraLED is a preconfigured, compact and optimized LED light source for 340 nm/ 380 nm or 360 nm/ 405 nm ratiometric Fura-2 or Fura-8 fluorescence imaging. Our partner company Cairn Research Ltd. introduced an LED light source for Fura-2 recently, but only with 360 nm isosbestic ratioing (due to limitations in LED availability). Now, they are delighted to offer full 340 nm/ 380 nm ratiometric Fura-2 imaging with integrated excitation filters and a near perfect stability. Similarly, the LED configuration for Fura-8 is also available.
Optimization
Ratiometric calcium imaging with LEDs can work extremely well, but, due to the relatively narrow bandwidths and spectral variations of individual LEDs, it requires attention to detail. The FuraLED head works directly with a controller and makes the process simple. As we take care of the LED selection, intensity regulation and bespoke optics, we make your experiments work with the best possible signal-to-noise ratio. The synchronization with other devices allows calcium imaging at maximum camera frame rates. Furthermore, you can choose between the conventional Fura-2, or the red-shifted Fura-8, which now enables the use of standard Plan Apo lenses, since they do not transmit light at 340 nm.
Flexibility
For the FuraLED the full range of microscope or macroscope couplings is available. The LED light source can also be connected to the controller providing dual digital inputs for combined software and direct camera modulation, supporting reduced photobleaching. In addition, most researchers will also want to use visible indicators and, quite likely, their existing light source alongside the FuraLED. To facilitate this, the coupling is equipped with a straight-through port to accommodate any fiber based illuminator or additional Cairn LEDs.
